Are you ready to see your “Fixer Upper”? Just kidding. This post is about my hometown of Waco,Texas. Waco is located in central Texas and has a population of around 135,000 people. Waco is home to Baylor University, the Dr. Pepper Museum, and the hit HGTV show Fixer Upper. Blake and I headed home to celebrate Easter (last week) with my family and had a blast exploring where I grew up. (The only airline that flies into Waco is American Airlines, so shout out to the weather for making sure our day of travel was easy and on time.)
So, what is there to do in Waco for a long weekend? Waco is like every other city, you can eat, shop and explore. Below are my recommendations on how I would spend a long weekend in the city I grew up in.
Eating
Hecho En Waco – Amazing Mexican food located downtown next to the Silos. Recommendation: the Jalapeno Margarita. (They only have a Facebook)
Viteks– BBQ, located near Baylor University. Known for the Gut Pack, a delicious combination of Fritos, cheese and BBQ.
Diamond Backs– This is a bit more fancy and upscale. Located downtown known for their steaks and amazing deserts. Secret Tip: Ask for the tenderloin bruschetta, it isn’t on the menu anymore but they will still make it for you.
Georges Bar– A Waco Staple, and home to the Big O (16 oz beer). Recommendation: Baylor Beggars with ranch and the Crazy Wings.
Shipley Donuts– The only donuts and kolaches I have dreams about.
Lolita’s– Mexican Breakfast, you will thank me. (They don’t have a website, but you can look them up on Facebook.) They are located on Franklin Ave.
Shopping
Spice Village – A collection of more than 60 boutiques in a 30,000 sq ft building. This place has everything!
Magnolia Market– As seen on HGTV’s Fixer Upper. This place is packed all but has everything you see on the show. There is also a great outdoor area to sit and relax.
Exploring
Cameron Park Zoo– 52 acres of zoo right next to the Brazos River. You can feed giraffes, slide through the otter exhibit and watch the buffalo roam. (It is better than the Tampa zoo)
Dr. Pepper Museum– Built in 1906, and knocked down by a tornado (they rebuilt it). Located downtown, amazing history and even better fountain floats.
Balcones Distillery– Located downtown and they have a tasting room where you can get flights of their bourbon. This is a great place to stop for an afternoon.
There is a lot to do in Waco. If you go during football season, I recommend catching a game at McLane stadium, it is a beautiful stadium located on the river. If you find yourself in Texas, Waco is a must stop city. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out, I will be happy to share any information I can.
Happy Traveling!
